Denver Metro Chamber Leadership Foundation and Boettcher Foundation
“Both students receiving the first-ever CLA Student Leader of the Year award exemplify the quality of leadership that the Boettcher Foundation and the Denver Metro Chamber Leadership Foundation wanted to recognize,” said Tim Schultz, executive director of the Boettcher Foundation.
Nicholas Breitnauer, a member of the President’s Leadership Class (PLC) at the University of Colorado at Boulder, and Phoebe Coleman, a member of the Chancellor’s Scholars and Leaders class at the University of Colorado Denver, are the 2009 award recipients.
“This award is intended as a tribute to the students’ excellence in academics and intellectual curiosity, extraordinary support of their campus leadership programs, exceptional service to their schools and broader community, and outstanding character and personal resilience,” said Maureen McDonald, executive director of the DMCLF.
Breitnauer is studying molecular, cellular and developmental biology at CU-Boulder, and says his experience in the PLC has strengthened his resolve toward his chosen career path.
“My time in PLC has amplified the pursuit of my passion – to become a groundbreaking physician – and learning how to heal the world one person at a time. My PLC experience produced in me a life, directed,” he said.
Coleman is pursuing a degree in 3-D animation in medical technology at the University of Colorado Denver. Challenged with dyslexia, Coleman says her participation in the Chancellor’s Scholars and Leaders class has helped her combat the condition, which has stifled so many others.
“A combination of help from my professional tutors, as well as my leadership education, has enabled me become more outspoken and less afraid to verbalize my ideas in front of others,” she said.
Mejía, Breitnauer and Coleman will receive their awards during the annual Colorado Leadership Alliance Luncheon to be held on April 2, 2009 at the Hyatt Regency Denver at Colorado Convention Center.
